If u get a message or error stating HAL.DLL file missing or corrupted and if you are not able to log into windows then follow these steps.

Method 1

  1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
  2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
  3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
  4. By default this will be #1
  5. Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
  6. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Method 2

  1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
  2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
  3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
  4. By default this will be #1
  5. Type expand <drive>:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32
  6. Type fixboot.

This is caused if the BOOT.INI file which is in the root directory got corrupted or misplaced. even if the HAL.dll file which is in c:\windows\system32 is missing or corrupted.
